Deep cavities can lead to the need for root canal treatment. Do your genes play a role in cavity formation? While genetic dentistry is still in its infancy, we now know that 60% of cavities are genetic! Genes are responsible for producing tooth enamel, and strong enamel helps protect teeth and allow them to absorb important nutrients such as calcium and fluoride. Your immune system, saliva, eating habits, and other factors also contribute to the development (or resistance) of cavities.
