What is a root canal?

A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures performed, well over 14 million every year. This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need for dental implants or bridges.

At the center of your tooth is the pulp. Pulp is a collection of blood vessels that helps to build the surrounding tooth. Infection of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks, and chips, or repeated dental procedures. Symptoms of the infection can be identified as visible injury or swelling of the tooth, sensitivity to temperature, or pain in the tooth and gums.

If you experience any of these symptoms, your dentist will most likely recommend non-surgical treatment to eliminate the diseased pulp. This injured pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. Root canal therapy usually involves local anesthesia and may be completed in one or more visits depending on the treatment required. Success for this type of treatment occurs in about 90% of cases. If your tooth is not amenable to endodontic treatment or the chance of success is unfavorable, you will be informed at the time of consultation or when a complication becomes evident during or after treatment. Dr. Cunningham uses local anesthesia to eliminate discomfort. In addition, we will provide nitrous oxide analgesia, if indicated. You will be able to drive home after your treatment, and you probably will be comfortable returning to your normal routine.

What happens after treatment?

When your root canal therapy has been completed, a record of your treatment will be sent to your restorative dentist. You should contact their office for a follow-up restoration within a few weeks of completion at our office. Your restorative dentist will decide on what type of restoration is necessary to protect your tooth. It is rare for endodontic patients to experience complications after routine endodontic treatment or microsurgery. If a problem does occur, however, we are available at all times to respond. To prevent further decay, continue to practice good dental hygiene.

How much will a root canal cost?

The cost associated with root canals can vary depending on factors such as the severity of damage to the affected tooth and which tooth is affected. In general, endodontic treatment is much less expensive than tooth removal and replacement with an artificial tooth.

Root canal is naturally one of those "dreaded but necessary", events in life. However, Dr. Cunningham and his pleasant staff made the visit as "normal" as possible. I especially enjoyed the Royals baseball dialogue as the work proceeded. Go Royals!

I was referred by my dentist to Dr. Cunningham after I told him I had a strange sore on my upper gums where I had a previous crown replaced and installed. Dr. Cunningham saw me on July 17 2024. He diagnosed it as an infected nerve in my root and said I would need to have a root canal. Also, the tooth next to it also had a problem and would need the same remedy. I was scheduled for the first root canal for July 18 the next day. To repair the other tooth we were looking for a date later in July or early August. Later on the 17th I got a call from Dr. Cunningham's office and the person after me on the 18th had canceled and they could do both root canals back to back Was I up for it? Yes, I would just like to get it done. On the 18th I showed up at Dr. Cunningham's office and the staff processed me through and got me ready to go in no time flat. Dr. Cunningham came in and explained to me what he was doing and how it was going to be done and if I had any concerns just to let him or his staff know . Dr. Cunningham is a very personal, intelligent, caring, people oriented doctor. We completed the first process within an hour. Then I got to take a break and get up and walk around and get ready for the next one. The next one went smoothly or even more smoothly than the first one. Dr. Cunningham is a rock , and is as steady as can be while drilling to my nerves in my roots of my teeth. He was always concerned about how I was feeling so that I had no pain. With the second one completed within an hour also, I was given the information that I would need to recuperate from the surgery. I had already picked up a prescription for pain before the surgery. The left side of my face was pretty numb so there was not a lot of pain, but he told me it would be painful later on. This afternoon it has not been unbearable and the swelling from the numbing has gone down and other than being a little sore everything is fine. For me, the biggest problem is not being able to eat hard foods for five days so I am living on yogurt, peanut butter sandwiches and soft foods like mashed potatoes. I am using it as a reason to lose extra weight. I would recommend Dr. Cunningham to anyone needing an Endodontic physician. he also explained to me that he would send my x-rays, prior to and post surgery, to my dentist and that I should contact him about the further process of fixing the crowned teeth. Thank you, Dr. Cunningham and your staff who are all very helpful and concerned for me. Ray Stolhand. Sent from my iPhone
